I often get asked a lot by new backpackers who are travelling to Thailand if it is worth going to the north, or if they should just head south to the islands after Bangkok.
The answer is a simple resounding YES! In my 5 backpacking trips in Thailand, I think I enjoy the north the most out of anywhere else.
Of course the islands are beautiful and who doesn’t wanna be on the beach? But islands can feel similar to any other island in the world. Its great if you really are looking to relax.
But if you want to soak up culture, art, and the best food in Thailand, then the north is not to be missed. Lets talk about a few of the spots in the north that backpackers frequent.
Chiang Mai
Definitely the most popular spot among backpackers in the north, and for good reason. Chiang Mai is a good sized city, but nothing like Bangkok. Even though its a sizeable city, it feels much more low-key and laid back.
It definitely has an artistic vibe as the city is full of musicians, painters, artists, which you can find happening at the various night markets. Speaking of night markets, there’s a huge one every weekend with hundreds of vendors. Great way to get some souvenirs and gifts for people back home.
As mentioned, food is in my opinion the best in Thailand here in Chiang Mai. And is it ever cheap! I would get basil chili chicken on rice (pad krapow gai) for 40 baht ($1.30 USD). Cheap and delicious is the perfect combination for any backpacker.
There is also a large backpacker scene as Chiang Mai is a popular spot to hit. So if you are looking for other backpackers to meet, you surely will at one of the many many hostels in town. And there is a pretty good night life with a complex of bars and clubs.
Lots to do in Chiang Mai and highly recommended to see.
Pai
Pai is a great spot to hit from Chiang Mai as its about a 3 hours van ride. Many choose to go there right after Chiang Mai, but it is a bumpy ride with over 400 turns and up a mountain. So be prepared with some anti-nausea meds. If you truly can’t handle it, Pai does have a small airport to fly into.
But its super worth it. Pai has gained a legendary status among backpackers. It is a quiet, small, picturesque town in the mountains with a hippie vibe. Definitely be prepared to wear some elephant pants lol.
While the town is small, you’ll want to rent yourself a motorbike as there is some stunning nature to see just outside the town. It really is beautiful and many backpackers end up staying in Pai for much longer than anticipated. Its a great place to “chill”.
Highly recommend Pai, but definitely make sure you have time there. One day will be devoted to getting there and getting settled in. And the last day won’t have much going on since you’ll be preparing for a van ride to go to your next spot.
Chiang Rai
I’ve only been to Chiang Rai once and only for a few days, so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt. I would say Chiang Rai is skippable. There just isn’t that much going on there.
One thing that it does have going for it, is that there is more local culture, less westerners, so its probably a more realistic picture of a Thai city. So it was interesting to see some of that, but I must admit, I felt kind of bored there.
If you are hellbent on seeing the white temple, then sure, go to Chiang Rai, but don’t plan too much time there.
Personally I would not recommend heading to Chiang Rai unless its on the way to your next destination.
Final Thoughts
If you are considering going to the north of Thailand, definitely do it! Trust me, it could be the best part of your trip.
If you only have a few days, just go to Chiang Mai.
If you have a week or more, then go to both Chiang Mai and Pai.
And finally, keep your plans open ended. Who knows, you might fall in love with Pai and want to stay for a long time 😉
